Setting the Standard for a Stronger Future
Good neighbors know that when working people and companies come together to invest in good jobs, safe workplaces, and thriving communities, everyone benefits. This includes forward-thinking manufacturing companies who are demonstrating that being a good neighbor can lead to vital and lasting partnerships that strengthen everyone.
One powerful example is the Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) this coalition implemented in 2022 with the Anniston, Alabama transit bus manufacturer New Flyer of America Inc. – the largest bus manufacturer in North America.
Through years of organizing, advocacy, and negotiation, New Flyer came together as partners with our coalition to start building a fairer local economy, adopt new equity measures, and be accountable to one another. The agreement accomplished a great deal, including the creation of new pathways for better jobs for historically disadvantaged workers. When New Flyer signed the agreement, they set a strong example of what it looks like to be a good neighbor.
Nearly two years later, New Flyer workers chose to form their union and achieve a collective bargaining agreement all within several months. The new contract dramatically improved wages, benefits and working conditions for the workers.
The community benefits agreement didn’t just improve working conditions at New Flyer and for the company’s neighbors in Anniston, it also helped the company secure its position as a leader in the public transportation manufacturing industry. By investing in its workforce and listening to community voices, New Flyer set a national example of how companies can meet the needs of their customers, employees, and shareholders at the same time.
We believe the same path forward is possible for other big companies in Alabama today. By becoming good neighbors, companies have the opportunity to build a future where prosperity is truly shared. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s a smart investment in long-term success.

Too often, the big companies aren’t acting as good neighbors – even after they receive millions of dollars in public money. Good Neighbors Alabama is bringing the big companies to the table to find solutions, seek partnership, and build power for our neighbors.
